The Effects of Drinking in Sexual Behavior - 04/21/2012

Drinking alcoholic beverages is a normal part of adult life. It helps people relax and relieve their stress as long as it’s taken in moderation.

Heavy drinking, on the other hand, has negative effects not only in a person’s health but as well as in his sexual behavior. Scientists have found a link between heavy drinking and having multiple sex partners. This was the finding of a study done at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.

The research that covered 601 married adults aged 18 to 25 found that the average age of those who had sex for the first time was 16. The average number of sexual partners was nine.

However, there was a difference among those who were non-heavy drinkers, heavy drinkers and the alcohol-dependent. It was found that the greater the amount of alcohol consumed, the more sexual partners a person has. In addition, those with behavioral problems had even more partners.

For instance, the regular drinkers reported having seven partners while the problem drinkers reported having 11. Those who were alcohol-dependent, meanwhile, had 12. In another category of the respondents, those who had a conduct disorder reported 16 partners on average. Those who were alcohol-dependent and suffering from a medical disorder such as the attention deficit hyperactivity syndrome had the highest number of sexual partners.

Meanwhile, a Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine study revealed that binge drinking can lead to risky sexual behavior. The danger is highest, however, among women. Binge drinking is referred to as having five or more drinks at one time.

According to researchers, this habit is linked to unsafe sexual practices and high rates of sexually transmitted infections. In particular, the rate is high for getting infected with gonorrhea. Based on the study, women heavy drinkers were five time more likely to get gonorrhea. And those who continue this habit are at risk of acquiring HIV, the virus that causes the dreaded AIDS disease.

The study that covered 671 respondents showed that women who drank too much were more likely to have anal sex than their male counterparts and women who don’t drink. Another finding was that these female binge drinkers were twice as likely to have different partners.

Researchers from the Johns Hopkins University pointed out that heavy drinking is not good for women. If they drink the same amount of alcohol as what men consume, they have a tendency to show risky sexual behavior which can be dangerous to their health. The negative effects include a higher blood alcohol concentration in their system and impairment in their bodies.

Drinking in moderation is always important whether you’re a teen or adult. In short, drink what you can only afford and not go on until you lose your consciousness. Also, using a condom is one of the most effective ways of protecting yourself from sexually transmitted diseases. With so many types available over the counter these days, it should be a must for every teen and adult to have this all the time because you never know when you want to have sex.
