Heart attacks are a common health issue these days. In the U.S., it is the number one cause of death for both men and women. A 2008 data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention revealed that more than 616,000 people died of heart disease.
This heart problem has many causes. One of them is a strenuous physical activity. This can include jogging, working out and even doing sex.
Past studies have confirmed that extreme physical stress can trigger a heart attack. The effect can be felt about an hour or more after the activity.
Another study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, researchers found that during exercise, the risk of heart attack increases 3.5 times higher than when a person is not engaged in any physical activity. When doing sex, the risk is also 2.7 times higher. Additionally, the risk of dying form cardiac arrest was found to be five times higher during and immediately after a strenuous physical activity.
A significant point here is that between people who regularly exercise and those who do physical activities only occasionally, the rise in heart-attack risk was smaller among the regular exercisers. The scientists found that there was a drop in the risk of heart attack by 45 percent when a person engaged in regular physical activity each week.
The study suggested that for people who don’t do regular exercise but who want to start on doing physical activities more often, they should do it in a gradual process. This is strongly recommended for people who have been sedentary and not used to exercising. The experts stressed that it would be better for this type of people to consult first with their physician about what types of exercise they can do to keep them fit.
When it comes to sex, did you know that a sexual encounter lasting from five to 15 minutes consumes much energy similar to climbing two flights of stairs? If it is longer than 15 minutes, it is already considered a vigorous exercise.
But a 1996 study showed that there is only a two in a million chance of sex causing a heart attack. Even those with a previous history of this condition, the chance is about twenty in a million only. But although there is a low risk, men who have a coronary heart disease should not be too complacent. They should still follow the rules and take it slow.
Using a condom during sex is also one way of having a stress-free experience with your partner. Condoms should keep you from worrying about causing unwanted pregnancy and transmitting diseases that can add up to your stress while doing this intimate act.
