Men Have More Sexual Partners in their Lifetime - 04/21/2012

Men as has been proven time and again are sexually active during the most part of their lives. It is not even surprising that some of those already married still manage to get involved in an extra-marital relationship. Old age does not also stop some men from having sex with their partners or other younger women.

In England, a health survey of 14,000 people has found that men have an average of 9.3 different partners in their lifetime. Some 27 percent of men claimed to have sexual intercourse with 10 or more partners.

Women, on the other hand, had an average of only 4.7 partners in their lives. Compared to men, 24 percent said they had sex with only one man in their lifetime while 13 percent had different partners. Also, the females were more likely to be sure about the number of lovers they had.

The older a woman gets, the more monogamous she tends to become. The survey published by the NHS Information Centre said that 40 percent of women aged 55 to 69 claimed to have only one sexual partner throughout their lives.

In addition to sticking to one man, older women were also found to be less active in sex. Some 36 percent said they had no partner in the past 12 months.

An important finding of the survey, as pointed by the researchers was the increasing number of young people who engage in sex. They noted that many teens are taking risks and losing their virginity at much earlier ages. The study suggested that sexual behavior has changed so much since the past because people who engage in sex are becoming younger today.

For example, the Health Survey of England found that a fifth of men and one in seven women claimed to have had sex even before they turned 16. Among those aged 16 and 24, the number of young adults who have done it before their 16th birthday went up to 27 percent. Also, at least or only one in 10 people said they still had not done it.

What’s worth noting, though, was that among these young people, many are aware of the importance of using a form of contraception including condoms and the pill. Among young women, a fifth said they used the pill in the past 12 months. Unfortunately despite this awareness on the use of contraception, some 17 percent were still affected by sexually transmitted diseases.

On the issue of teenage pregnancy, the rate in England has gone down particularly among females below 18 years old. The 2009 rate of 40 conceptions per 1,000 is said to be the lowest. Experts, however, claimed this is still high when compared with the western countries in Europe. For this reason, labor and public health officials are calling on the youngsters to think many times before having sex. They stressed that this act should not be rushed because there are consequences that can affect one’s health.

Add to this is the all time importance of using a condom. This is the most popular contraception available and now comes in different styles that provide the most comfort to users.
