Regular Lubricant vs. Spermicide for Condoms - 03/30/2012

Condoms come in all shapes, sizes, scents and flavors these days. What this means is more choices for the teens and adults who want to experience the most pleasure with their partners.

Using a condom normally requires some lubricant. This is to ensure a smooth sexual experience without distractions. Lubricants also come in different types depending on one’s preference and condition.

The two major choices are the regular lubricant and the spermicide. There’s a difference between the two.

The regular lubricant used with a condom is aimed at preventing friction between the private parts of the couple engaging in sex and easier to put on. It can be made from a silicone substance while some are water-based. A lubricant should never be oil-based because the presence of oil or grease can cause the condom to break making it less effective in its purpose of preventing STD transmission and unwanted pregnancy.

The spermicide, meanwhile, is a substance meant to prevent pregnancy. It works by eliminating sperms when inserted in the vagina during intercourse. To make it more effective, however, it has to be used together with other contraceptives including the condom. When combined, they can lower the pregnancy rates compared to just using it alone.

The most common ingredient in a spermicide is nonoxynol-9. This is available in different forms such as in gel, foams and films. It should be noted, though, that this substance is not recommended by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Some of its possible side effects include itching, irritation, burning feeling of the private parts and in women, it may cause yeast and urinary tract infections as well as bacterial vaginosis.

In addition, condoms already lubricated with spermicide by the manufacturer may not last long. This may even cause urinary tract infection in women. The World Health Organization (WHO), for its part, is not in favor of promoting this product.

One condom brand that gives you these choices is Lifestyles. It has the Ultra Sensitive with the regular lubricant and the Ultra Sensitive with spermicide. The regular Ultra Sensitive features thin yet safe and durable condoms that promise heightened sensitivity and stimulation during intercourse benefiting both partners. It has a special lubricant to provide comfort and avoid friction and a reservoir tip.

The Ultra Sensitive with spermicide, on the other hand, is meant to provide added protection. And since it comes in natural color with no strong latex odor, couples are assured of a pleasurable sexual experience every time.

Adults and teens who want to enjoy the most comfortable and pleasurable sexual experience can always choose to use more lubricant if they so desire. The lubricant that comes with the condom may not be enough for them hence, the need to add some more.

The Lifestyles brand also offers several variants of warming personal lubricants that can be used together with their condoms. These are hypoallergenic and approved by dermatologists so people who are sensitive can still be assured of their comfort and protection.
